This transition has showcased their multifaceted creativity. Not only have they gained recognition for their behind-the-scenes production talents but also their performance skills.
Here are some names you’re probably familiar with;
YOUNG JONN
Newer fans of Young Jonn may know him for recent hits like Xtra Cool, Dada featuring Davido, Stamina featuring Tiwa Savage and Ayra Starr, and his latest release, Sharpally. However, Young Jonn ‘The Wicked Producer’, is also the genius behind some of your all-time favourite tracks. This includes Olamide’s Story for the Gods, Lil Kesh’s Rora and Kizz Daniel’s Mama, just to name a few. Young Jonn’s exceptional talent and contributions to the music industry have earned him accolades such as the “Producer of the Year” at the Headies in 2016 and the African Producer of the Year at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival in 2017.
Tekno
You might know him for his catchy music or his skilled dance steps. However, what may not be common knowledge is that Tekno didn’t just begin his career as an artist; he also ventured into the world of music production. Over the years, he has been successful in his music career, delivering hit tracks like Pana, Duro, Skeletun and making waves with his recent collaboration with Kizz Daniel on the chart-topping hit Buga. He also has a feature on Beyonce’s album, ‘Lion King: The Gift,’ in the track Don’t Jealous Me. Tekno’s talents extend beyond the microphone as he has also made his mark as a producer. His production credits include popular tracks like Davido’s If, Swae Lee’s Don’t Be Late featuring Drake, Ice Prince’s Boss and even Flavour’s Catch You. Don Jazzy
Don Jazzy is a prominent figure in the Afrobeats music scene, known as a singer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the expansion of African music over the past decade. His musical journey began at a young age of 16 when he started producing tracks for emerging artists. Since then, he has produced numerous hit singles and albums that have left a lasting impact on Nigerian music. During Mo’ Hits, Don Jazzy and his team pioneered the popular Afropop era in the 2000s, delivering chart-topping hits like Why Me, Bumper To Bumper, Over The Moon, Oliver Twist, etc.
His outstanding work earned him several accolades, including Producer of the Year at the 2006 Nigerian Music Awards, the 2007 Nigerian Entertainment Awards, and the 2011 Headies. Notably, Don Jazzy’s influence expanded globally when Mo’ Hits collaborated with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music in 2011. This marked a new chapter in his career. In March 2012, he founded Mavin Records, which has since become Nigeria’s top record label with successful acts such as Tiwa Savage, Rema, Ayra Starr being signed. Don’t forget his hit songs in collaborations with his signed artists like Dorobucci, Looku Looku, Pop Something, and Mr. Endowed. Maleek Berry
The British-Nigerian record producer, Maleek Berry is also a well-known recording artist. His breakthrough into the music scene occurred in 2012, and in 2014. He earned a nomination for “Music Producer of the Year” at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Maleek Berry has built an impressive portfolio, collaborating with renowned artists like Wizkid, Davido, Wale, Fuse ODG, Runtown, and Iyanya. In 2017, as a signed artist under the Starboy Label, he received a nomination in the Best Male category at the prestigious MOBO Awards. Notably, Maleek Berry’s production talents shine through in hits like Sauce Kid and Davido’s Carolina, Wizkid’s The Matter, Banky W’s All for You, Naeto C’s Ati De, and many more.
Pheelz
Who knew that a 10-year-old Phillip singing in the church would grow up to be a successful and well-known producer and songwriter who we now know as Pheelz. Years later, he has gone on to work with artists such as Davido, Usher, Wizkid, Fireboy DML, Tiwa Savage, etc. With a diverse skill set as a multi-instrumentalist, he is proficient in playing the drums, piano, and guitar which adds a unique dimension to his musical creations. Today, he has evolved into an accomplished artist with successful singles including Finesse featuring BNXN and Electricity. Additionally, he has released an EP titled “Hear Me Out” in 2021 and another one this year aptly named Pheelz Good EP.
